Story behind Isidore on the Rocks
New England has long been known as the land of ghosts and goblins. Here in southern Maine we have many tales of legends, ghosts and hauntings, of the phantom ghost ship Isidore.
On a stormy night in November 1842, the three-masTed ship Isidore, left
Kennebunkport full of lumber against the better judgment of its crew. Some of the men had dreams of coffins and premonitions in the days and nights before that they would wreck, on their maiden voyage to New Orleans. However, they were demanded to sail into the snowy angry sea by their fearless captain. One of the members of the crew who had first warned of his premonitions abandoned his post and hid in town as the crew set for sail, for he feared the fate of the ship and the punishment from his captain.
The very next morning the tragic fate of the Isidore was brought to attention, as the remains of the ship washed ashore the rocks and sands of Ogunquit & Cape Neddick.
Seven of the sixteen-crew members bodies were recovered, the captain's body was never found.
Later, the Nubble Light was built on the site known as Cape Neddick Island, where the Isidore is believed to have wreeked nearby the rocky cliff. To this day the local legend is of the shipwrecked ghost Isidore patrolling York's waters. It has said to be seen on foggy stormy nights, near Boon Island, as far as the Isles Of Shoals and even close to the shores by tourists who stay as guests at inns along the beach. The ship is said to have tattered tor sails, the stern is bent, and the crew stares out into oblivion. When sea mariners and lobstermen try to approach the vessel it disappears into the mist.
Although the Isidore's story is tragic, it inspired the scene of one of the world's most famous lighthouses, bringing safety for future voyages, beauty, tourism and another ghostly haunt to Maine
